Board member Biographies

Ken Hickey
Chairman
 

Ken Hickey is the CFO for Microsoft’s WW Operations and leads a global finance organization the US, Puerto Rico, Ireland, Luxembourg, India, China and Singapore. Prior to his current role Ken was the Senior Finance Director for Microsoft’s World-Wide Communications Sector business and Senior Finance Director for Microsoft’s European Operations Center.  He joined Microsoft in 2007 and has worked in both Ireland and the U.S.

Before joining Microsoft, Ken spent 5 years as the Director of Financial Operations at Hertz Europe, and before that, held financial management roles in GE Capital, AIG Global Investment Group and Cambridge Group plc.

Ken is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers. He received his Masters in Business Administration from Warwick Business School and was recently awarded a Diploma in Company Direction from the Institute of Directors. Ken is dedicated to creating a future which enables people with disabilities realize their potential and was a volunteer at Cheeverstown prior to joining the Board of Directors. Ken is also passionate about learning and teaching and is Lecturer and Module Co-Ordinator of Business Strategy on University College Dublin’s Bachelor of Business Studies program. Ken’s personal interests are in rugby, fitness, reading, travel and tennis but most of his free time is spent with his wife and three children.

Derval Kennedy
Board Member

Derval Kennedy is Founder and Director of StratAdept – a consulting firm specialising in strategy and organisation transformation, based on human-centred design.  She is an accomplished executive with over 30+ years’ experience delivering strategy and transformation programmes in financial services, life sciences and technology. 

Before establishing StratAdept, Derval held a number of senior roles in international consulting.  Derval was also Head of Commercial for the Innovation Value Institute (a research body established by Intel, Boston Consulting Group and Maynooth University). Before moving into consulting, Derval worked in senior business development roles in capital markets in London and New York.  Now as a senior strategic advisor and consultant, she works with organisations to help them co-create and own their strategies for transformation, growth and sustainability. 

Derval maintains a keen interest in using leading academic thinking and innovative, human-centred design methods. Derval has an MSc. in Strategy & Organisation Behaviour from Trinity College, Dublin, and holds number of professional certifications in strategy and change design. She continues to be a contributor to academic innovation and leadership programmes. Recent publications include: “Making Capabilities Explicit is the work of Leadership” The European Business Review, May/June 2015).  Derval is married with a step-daughter and her personal interests are reading, cooking, travel and yoga.

 

Sharon Murphy

Board Member

Sharon Murphy is a volunteer member of the Board of Management. She is a mother to three daughters and the primary carer to her youngest Elaine, a service user of the Cheeverstown group. Sharon’s adult life has been dedicated to being an advocate for Elaine’s quality of life and access to vital services.

 

Alongside this Sharon has worked within the community organisation, An Cosán, as a facilitator. With a passion for childcare she encouraged others to invest in their education and future to achieve a better outcome for themselves and their family. Throughout this time she also developed her own skills through various qualifications. She has continued down the childcare pathway and now happily minds her grandson.

 

Sharon’s interests include music, walking, reading and travel where possible.

David Colfer
Board Member 

David currently works in SS&C Technologies in Middle Office in the Hedge Fund administration business as part of the EMEA team that supports its global operations in EMEA, APAC and North America. He has previous experience in Citibank where he held management roles in Corporate Actions and Governance. Additionally, David has a broad range of experience having worked in various units in Bank of Ireland for over 20 years.

David is an experienced and professional manager with strong leadership, organizational and strategic thinking skill set. 

He holds a degree in Financial Services from the Smurfit Business School in UCD and Diplomas in Financial Services form the Institute of Bankers in Ireland and Marketing from the Marketing Institute of Ireland.

His interest in Cheeverstown was initiated because it is a local charity and he wants to give something back to the community on a voluntary basis. David Joined the Board in 2018.

David is a keen sports person active in golf and played tennis, badminton and table tennis. He is married with two children and has travelled extensively in Europe and the US with them. 

 

Ultan Shannon

Board Member

 Ultan Shannon is a partner with Arthur Cox, a leading Irish commercial law firm with offices in Dublin, Belfast, London, New York and Silicon Valley, California, providing a comprehensive legal service to an international client base ranging from multinational organisations, banks and financial institutions and established global leaders to government agencies and new players in emerging industry sectors.  Ultan has been with Arthur Cox for 23 years and specializes in banking and finance law. 

Prior to joining Arthur Cox, Ultan spent 4 years in the USA where he completed his Masters (Banking and Corporate Finance) at Fordham University, New York, was admitted to the New York State Bar and worked as an attorney with a New York not-for-profit organization, Catholic Charities.  

Ultan’s personal interests include sport (rugby, GAA), cycling and travel.  Ultan has been a member of the board of Cheeverstown since 2015.
